Israeli AI Tool Estimates Age from a Single DNA Sample

Share

Israeli researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have created a revolutionary tool that determines biological age using artificial intelligence and a minuscule DNA sample. Unveiled in the journal Cell Reports, this method leverages methylation, a natural DNA alteration process, focusing on two DNA regions to identify aging markers. Using a deep learning model named MAgeNet, it predicts biological age with a remarkable median error of just 1.36 years for those under 50. This innovative tool operates independently of external factors like body weight or smoking, potentially allowing doctors to tailor treatments based on a patient’s actual biological age. In addition to medical applications, MAgeNet could transform forensic science, providing crucial age estimates from minimal DNA samples. Overall, this advancement presents significant implications for understanding aging and personalizing healthcare while also enhancing forensic investigations. As such, it represents a substantial leap in the intersection of AI technology, biology, and medicine.
