Italy Expands Antitrust Investigation into Meta: Key Reasons Behind the Move

Italy’s antitrust authority, AGCM, has intensified its investigation into Meta, focusing on allegations of the company abusing its dominant market position through its messaging service, WhatsApp. The probe, initiated in July, examines whether Meta’s new WhatsApp Business Solutions terms and AI integration could hinder competition in the AI chatbot services sector. The AGCM is also considering interim measures regarding WhatsApp’s new features, particularly the Meta AI assistant, which was reportedly integrated without user consent, potentially breaching EU competition rules. If found guilty, Meta could face fines of up to 10% of its global revenue. This investigation highlights the growing scrutiny of big tech companies’ practices in Europe, especially regarding AI and user consent. Meta has yet to respond to the AGCM’s actions, but the outcome could significantly impact its operations and compliance obligations within the EU market.
