Researchers at Sophia University in Japan, led by Yusuke Fukazawa, have developed an artificial intelligence system to predict bear encounters within a 1 sq km area. This innovative tool addresses a rising safety concern, as bear-related injuries and fatalities are anticipated to reach record levels. Fukazawa, an associate professor specializing in applied machine learning, aims to create an app that enhances safety for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Notably, Akita prefecture has seen a dramatic increase in bear encounters, with incidents skyrocketing from 800 to 3,910 in 2023. This surge has resulted in 193 bear attacks, injuring 212 people and leading to six fatalities nationwide. The shift in bear sightings to urban areas highlights the urgent need for awareness and safety measures. This project not only responds to growing concerns but also seeks to protect both humans and wildlife during outdoor activities.
