Judiciary Investigates AI Tools, Emphasizing Enhancement Over Replacement of Human Judgment: Justice Surya Kant

In an address at the Sixth Full Meeting of the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts (SIFoCC), Chief Justice of India designate Surya Kant highlighted the judiciary’s exploration of AI-based tools for research and data analytics. He emphasized that technology should enhance, not replace, human judgment, pointing out the ethical implications of AI in justice delivery. Kant stressed that the law is fundamentally tied to human conscience and must adapt to preserve moral integrity. He applauded initiatives like livestreaming court proceedings and real-time access to judgments, asserting the importance of perceived fairness in judicial processes. Kant noted India’s advancements in commercial law and emphasized the integration of economic progress with environmental sustainability. With the e-Courts Phase III initiative poised to create a unified, cloud-based judicial ecosystem, he affirmed India’s commitment to a transparent and efficient legal framework, enhancing trust for investors and citizens alike. The judiciary aims to engage proactively in global commercial justice dialogues.
