Kerala High Court Unveils New Guidelines for AI Integration in District Judiciary

The Kerala High Court has established a comprehensive policy for responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in the district judiciary, emphasizing the importance of privacy and data security. While AI tools can enhance judicial efficiency, potential risks include privacy violations and diminished trust in judicial outcomes. These guidelines apply to all judicial officers, employees, interns, and law clerks within the district judiciary.

The High Court defined key terms, including “approved AI tools,” which are applications cleared for use after formal evaluation. The ten guiding principles advocate for strict adherence to regulations, prohibiting the submission of sensitive case information to non-approved AI tools and ensuring human oversight in all processes.

Judicial outputs generated by these tools must be verified, and translation results require scrutiny by qualified personnel. Courts must maintain detailed AI usage audits and encourage ongoing training for judiciary members, addressing any tool-related issues immediately with the IT department.
