Kerala Police Implement In-House AI Tool to Accelerate Object and Vehicle Detection from Images

The Thiruvananthapuram police have implemented a groundbreaking AI-based tool designed to enhance criminal investigations by identifying objects from visual data. Initially developed by Thrissur city police in January, this innovative tool can detect vehicles and pedestrians from various sources, including CCTV footage. ASP Hardik Meena, a graduate from IIT, led the project with oversight from DIG Harishankar and Commissioner S Ilango, showcasing a fully in-house development effort at no cost to the government. Originally focused on identifying motorcycles, the tool has been expanded to recognize four-wheelers, trucks, and pedestrians. Currently, efforts are underway to enhance its capabilities further by identifying various pedestrian subsets. This advancement promises to significantly reduce the time needed for law enforcement to process visual evidence, thereby streamlining criminal investigations across the state. The integration of this AI technology highlights the commitment to improving safety and efficiency within the police department.
