King, Developer of Candy Crush, Questions Microsoft’s Commitment to AI

Microsoft is targeting 70-80% integration of AI tools in daily developer tasks, aspiring for complete automation to enhance efficiency in workflows. However, this initiative doesn’t seem to apply uniformly across its first-party studios, with King, the Candy Crush developer, struggling to adapt as expected. This raises concerns about how AI could influence game development, balancing cost savings against creative integrity.

In 2023, Microsoft outlined ambitious AI plans for gaming, including developing an AI assistant for Xbox and exploring AI-driven voice acting and art direction. They also aim to incorporate AI features in the next Xbox generation, though specific details remain unclear.

Yet, King’s internal challenges complicate this narrative. Reports highlight a toxic work environment, with about 200 layoffs occurring as AI tools replace human roles. The lack of job security has led to employee unrest, prompting some to consider legal action in light of these drastic changes.
