The UK government is launching a free app called Gov.uk on Tuesday, aimed at simplifying life admin for citizens aged 16 and over. While designed to serve as a mobile hub for government interactions—excluding NHS and HM Revenue and Customs services—the initial version will primarily direct users to existing government webpages. Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science and Technology, acknowledged limitations in design and functionality, promising enhancements by year-end. Notably, a generative AI chatbot, utilizing a large language model from Anthropic, will not be available immediately. Future app features will include tracking benefits, personal notifications like vehicle MOT deadlines, and local weather alerts based on postcode. The app aims to streamline access to various government services, ultimately connecting to a digital wallet that will facilitate functions like a digital driving license. As it stands, the app is in its “minimum viable product” phase and plans for future developments are underway.
