Leak Indicates ChatGPT May Start Displaying Ads Soon

Ads are reportedly coming to the free version of ChatGPT, as revealed by engineer Tibor Blaho. Code snippets from the ChatGPT Android app beta version indicate the introduction of an “ads feature” including elements like “search ads” and “ads carousel.” This move aligns ChatGPT with industry norms, similar to Google’s advertising model. Although the platform has historically avoided ads, relying on subscription revenue from its Pro version, it currently faces profitability challenges. OpenAI, which aims for sustainability, may need an additional $207 billion to fuel its growth, with projections indicating profitability only by 2030. CEO Sam Altman has voiced the potential for advertising but emphasizes the complexity of implementing it responsibly. As ChatGPT attracts around 800 million weekly users, monetizing this audience could be significant. This shift reflects broader trends in AI and digital advertising, presenting both opportunities and challenges for user experience.
