In their 2025 study, “Digital Divide and Digital Engagement in Small Business Owners,” published in Information, Communication & Society, researchers explored the impact of digital literacy on small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many owners struggled with digital applications for grants and loans, highlighting a significant digital skills gap despite their entrepreneurial spirit. They found that businesses utilizing digital tools, such as websites and e-commerce platforms, experienced greater revenue growth compared to those that didn’t, particularly among owners aged 50 and older. The research underscored the digital divide as a critical socioeconomic issue influenced by factors like age, gender, ethnicity, education, and income. To support underprivileged business owners, the team recommended tailored digital literacy training, leveraging generative AI-based chatbots and Agentic AI for personalized, accessible coaching. These tools can bridge the skill gap, ultimately fostering resilience and enhancing business success in a digital-first economy.
