LG Uplus Reveals Data Breach Caused by AI Voice App Malfunction

LG Uplus, a leading South Korean telecommunications firm, recently announced a minor technical error affecting its AI-driven voice call app, ixi O, which exposed limited user information. The issue, caused by a misconfigured caching system during service optimization, allowed certain call records, including fragments of phone numbers and timestamps, to be accessed by 101 users who reinstalled the app within a specific time frame. Affected data belonged to 36 users, with exposure ranging from one to six unrelated individuals. Importantly, no critical personal identifiers were compromised. The error was swiftly identified following a customer report, with LG Uplus resolving the issue within 30 minutes and notifying affected users. Although the leak was below the mandatory reporting threshold of 1,000 as per Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act, LG Uplus voluntarily informed the Personal Information Protection Commission. The company emphasized that the incident was not linked to an external cyberattack and expressed regret for any concerns caused.
