The Linux kernel is evolving with the upcoming Linux 7.0 release, now integrating support for new standardized AI keycodes, expanding beyond the Microsoft Copilot key already available on select laptops. This enhancement focuses on improved user interactions with AI agents through three innovative keycodes: Action on Selection, Contextual Insertion, and Contextual Query.
The Action on Selection key enables users to perform actions on highlighted content with options like “click to explain” or “click to summarize.” The Contextual Insertion key triggers overlays for content generation directly into the current focus area, while the Contextual Query key provides suggestions based on selected images or text.
These advancements, approved last month and now part of Linux 7.0, highlight a shift toward more sophisticated AI functionalities in computing. Additionally, notable updates include support for Nova Lake device IDs and the VXE Dragonfly R1 Pro controller via the Kysona driver, showcasing enhanced hardware compatibility.
