A team of researchers at LSU, led by Professor Supratik Mukhopadhyay, has created “DeepFire,” an innovative AI-driven disaster management tool designed to predict wildfires before they ignite. Launched in 2019, DeepFire empowers emergency managers by enabling proactive resource allocation, thereby mitigating the impact of destructive fires. This groundbreaking system boasts a prediction accuracy of around 90%, assisting teams in forecasting wildfire threats up to 35 days in advance. Mukhopadhyay and his team, comprising researchers Rubayet bin Mostafiz, Saiful Sajol, and Thomas Douthat, are at the forefront of wildfire innovation as finalists in the XPRIZE Wildfire competition. They aim to expand DeepFire’s capabilities to address other natural hazards, like hurricanes and flooding. This pioneering tool stands to revolutionize disaster response, making it crucial for future emergency management strategies. The ongoing research is also exploring community behavioral responses during evacuation scenarios, promising a comprehensive approach to disaster preparedness.
