Maharashtra Team Triumphs at India AI Impact Summit 2026: OpenAI Academy x NxtWave’s Largest GenAI Student Challenge

A team of four young builders from Maharashtra, known as LUMOS AI, won the Grand Champion title at the OpenAI Academy x NxtWave Buildathon, part of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. They developed a real-time wearable assistive system for visually and speech-impaired individuals, earning a ₹5 lakh prize. The event mobilized over 70,000 students across seven states, showcasing Maharashtra’s leadership in AI innovation. This initiative under the IndiaAI Mission highlighted the transition from AI experimentation to practical solutions, with 90 finalist teams addressing issues in healthcare, agriculture, and education. The jury, including leaders from OpenAI and AICTE, evaluated projects based on scalability and application of Large Language Models. Guest speakers emphasized India’s youth as future nation-builders. The buildathon reinforces the importance of indigenous AI solutions aligned with regional challenges, aiming for inclusive and impactful innovation across the country.
