At SoftBank’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Masayoshi Son announced plans to position the company as a dominant player in the artificial super intelligence (ASI) sector within the next decade. He aims for SoftBank to rival tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, stating the opportunity in ASI mirrors the competitive dynamics seen in current tech markets. Highlighting SoftBank’s aggressive strategy, the company has invested heavily, including a $6.5 billion acquisition of U.S. semiconductor designer Ampere and up to $40 billion in ChatGPT-parent OpenAI, bringing its total investment in OpenAI to $32 billion. Son expressed regret over not investing in AI earlier. Following its fourth-quarter earnings report, which showed a rise in net sales, SoftBank is refocusing on investments after past successes and failures, hoping to leverage the current AI boom for future growth.
