Mathematicians Prof. M Ram Murty and Prof. V Kumar Murty inspired around 550 students at IISER Kolkata through engaging talks aimed at demystifying mathematics. Prof. Kumar Murty’s presentation, “Reflections on the Computer and the Human Brain,” highlighted the evolving role of artificial intelligence in information processing, urging students to apply critical thinking when using AI as a learning tool. In contrast, Prof. Ram Murty focused on “The Art of Research,” stressing that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to great research, while referencing India’s rich mathematical heritage exemplified by Srinivasa Ramanujan. The event featured showcases of mathematical models and interactive tours of cutting-edge research facilities. Following each talk, Q&A sessions fostered lively discussions, while a documentary offered insights into campus life. Prof. Rangeet Bhattacharyya, officiating director of IISER Kolkata, announced plans for more outreach events to promote science education among young scholars.
