Maximizing AI in General Practice: Strategies for Effective Utilization

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing both personal and professional realms, notably within the NHS, as outlined in England’s 10-Year Health Plan. A recent survey conducted by the Nuffield Trust and the Royal College of General Practitioners reveals that only 28% of UK GPs currently use AI. While most applications are for documentation and administrative tasks, many GPs express concerns about patient safety, professional liability, and data privacy. Despite these worries, there is a clear appetite for AI to alleviate routine tasks, allowing GPs to focus on patient care. To enhance AI adoption, policy-makers must provide clear national guidance on AI use, establish professional liability frameworks, and offer targeted training for GPs. Moreover, there are concerns that unequal AI access could exacerbate existing health disparities. For AI to transform general practice effectively, understanding patient engagement and addressing these barriers is crucial.
