Medics Face ‘Deskilling’ Risk from Overreliance on AI Technologies

Recent studies highlight the impact of AI image recognition technology on the detection of adenomas during colonoscopies. Research published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology demonstrates a 12.5% increase in adenoma detection rates (ADR) when AI is utilized, significantly enhancing patient outcomes. However, once physicians lose access to AI tools, their ability to detect adenomas declines below previous levels, dropping from 28.4% to 22.4%.

This phenomenon, termed “deskilling,” raises concerns about over-reliance on AI, as noted by the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Continuous exposure to AI may impair endoscopists’ skills, emphasizing the need for balanced integration of technology in healthcare.

These findings align with broader discussions on automation’s effects on professional competence, highlighting the critical need for further research into AI’s long-term implications in medical practice, ensuring that efficiency does not compromise skill development.
