Scotland Yard is now employing AI tools from the US company Palantir to scrutinize staff behavior, aiming to identify underperforming officers. This initiative, linked to improving professional standards, involves analyzing data on sickness, absences, and overtime among its 46,000 personnel. The Police Federation has criticized this method, labeling it “automated suspicion” and warning of potential misinterpretations of workload-related issues as misconduct.
The Metropolitan Police emphasizes that while Palantir’s systems help spot behavioral patterns, decisions will remain with human officers. Concerns have also emerged regarding employee privacy, with MPs questioning the transparency of Palantir’s public sector contracts in the UK.
Palantir’s technologies, which are utilized across various police forces for investigative support, are part of a broader push by Labour to responsibly integrate AI into policing. Investment of over £115 million is planned to advance AI development across England and Wales’s police forces.
