Meta Accelerates AI Ambitions by Recruiting Three Researchers from OpenAI

Sam Altman recently disclosed that Mark Zuckerberg has been actively recruiting top AI scientists via WhatsApp, arranging meetings through a group known as “Recruiting Party.” This effort comes as Meta successfully hires three senior researchers from OpenAI—Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai—who previously helped establish OpenAI’s Zurich office, for its new superintelligence team. Zuckerberg’s recruitment tactics, reportedly including offers exceeding $100 million, are part of a broader campaign to attract AI talent, although Altman has openly criticized these methods. While Zuckerberg’s aggressive strategy has had mixed success—securing a $14 billion partnership with Scale AI but failing to attract OpenAI co-founders—Altman expressed satisfaction that none of OpenAI’s leading talent have accepted Meta’s offers thus far. Meanwhile, Meta plans to invest up to $65 billion this year to advance its AI ambitions, with a vision of integrating AI more deeply into users’ lives.
