Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, faces controversy following the layoff of 600 employees in its Artificial Intelligence division. Mark Zuckerberg’s push for a “year of efficiency” has sparked concerns about the future of work at the company. In response, Meta is promoting Metamate, an internal AI chatbot designed to assist employees in drafting performance reviews by scanning documents, summarizing achievements, and compiling feedback. Joseph Spisak, Product Director at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, endorses Metamate’s efficiency, highlighting its ability to gather data quickly and serve as a “personal historian.” Although Meta hasn’t mandated its use, adoption for self-evaluations and manager reviews is expanding. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang emphasized the layoffs were crucial for fostering agility within the organization. As Meta aims to enhance its AI capabilities through the Meta Superintelligence Lab, it competes against industry giants like OpenAI and Google.
