Meta Appoints Jason Wei and Hyung Won Chung from OpenAI to Enhance Superintelligence Research

Share

OpenAI researchers Jason Wei and Hyung Won Chung are joining Meta’s new superintelligence lab, intensifying the AI arms race as Meta ramps up recruitment efforts led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Wei, renowned for his contributions to OpenAI’s o3 and deep learning models, previously excelled at Google, developing chain-of-thought prompting and advocating for reinforcement learning (RL). Wei’s insights emphasize the importance of innovation and personal risk-taking in AI development. Chung, also from OpenAI, has a notable background in deep learning and agent-based AI, collaborating with Wei on several projects. Their exit marks a significant trend in team-based recruitment at Meta, which is reportedly investing up to $300 million in top talent over four years. This hiring surge aims to position Meta as a leader in artificial general intelligence (AGI), though some experts, like former OpenAI board member Helen Toner, caution against potential pitfalls of this aggressive strategy.
