Meta has recruited three senior researchers from OpenAI—Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai—who previously helped establish OpenAI’s Zurich office. This recruitment aligns with Meta’s intensified focus on developing superintelligent AI, particularly after internal dissatisfaction regarding the performance of its Llama 4 model. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been actively involved in attracting AI talent, offering significant signing bonuses and attempting to recruit OpenAI co-founders, although they declined. Recently, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman remarked on Meta’s aggressive hiring tactics. In response to these needs, Meta has committed substantial funding, including $14 billion to AI startup Scale, and plans to invest up to $65 billion in AI infrastructure and research. The company aims to create artificial general intelligence (AGI), targeting systems that can match or exceed human cognitive abilities, representing a transformative shift in computing.
