Meta Declines EU’s AI Code of Practice Despite Commitment from AI Leaders Anthropic and OpenAI

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has declined to join the European Union’s voluntary AI Code of Practice, which enforces restrictions on the collection of copyrighted content. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, expressed concerns about the EU’s approach to AI policy, highlighting legal ambiguities for model developers. This decision distinguishes Meta from other AI leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which plan to sign the Code.

The AI Code, part of the EU’s comprehensive AI Act, aims to ease regulatory burdens for AI developers and mandates ethical content collection practices, particularly regarding copyrighted material. While some companies support the Code, arguing it fosters transparency and accountability, others, including Meta and industry leaders, warn that strict regulations could hinder AI innovation and competitiveness in Europe. The ongoing debate highlights a pivotal moment for AI development and copyright considerations within the EU.
