Meta has recruited three senior researchers from OpenAI, intensifying the competition between the two AI companies. The new hires—Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai—previously worked at OpenAI’s office in Zurich. This recruitment follows accusations from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that Meta has aggressively sought to lure his team with bonuses reaching up to $100 million. While OpenAI acknowledged the departures, they did not comment further, and Meta has not released an official statement. Once a leader in open-source AI, Meta faces challenges like delays in releasing models and notable staff losses. To strengthen its position, the company has appointed Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang for its AGI initiative and acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion. Altman noted growing tension, suggesting Meta views OpenAI as its key competitor.
