Meta Recruits OpenAI Scientist to Steer New AI Lab

Mark Zuckerberg has recruited Yang Song, a former high-ranking researcher at OpenAI, to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Song, who previously led strategic explorations at OpenAI, started his new role this month and reports to Shengjia Zhao, another OpenAI veteran. This recruitment follows Zuckerberg’s aggressive hiring spree earlier this summer, which brought in numerous experts from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Yang Song’s work at OpenAI focused on enhancing models’ capabilities with complex datasets and contributed to DALL-E 2’s development. While Zhao’s role as chief scientist at MSL was officially announced after he considered returning to OpenAI, the lab has seen some turnover, with a couple of researchers leaving for OpenAI and others, like Aurko Roy, moving to Microsoft. Despite these changes, Meta’s AI division continues to host a wealth of renowned talent amid its ongoing evolution.
