Meta Triumphs in AI Copyright Case as Judge Encourages Further Legal Action

During the Meta Connect event on September 25, 2024, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed a significant copyright ruling regarding the company’s Llama AI model. A U.S. District Judge ruled in favor of Meta, affirming that the use of books to train large language models (LLMs) falls under the fair use doctrine. The case involved 13 authors, including Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, who claimed Meta infringed copyright by using their books without permission. Despite acknowledging that copying protected works without consent is generally illegal, the judge determined the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate that Meta’s actions caused market harm. He pointed out flaws in Meta’s defense and stated that the ruling’s consequences only apply to these authors, leaving other authors free to pursue similar claims. The decision aligns with a previous ruling concerning Anthropic, which faced different legal challenges over its training practices.
