Meta Unveils a New Engagement Strategy: Proactive Chatbots That Message You First

Share

Meta is testing AI chatbots that proactively engage users on platforms like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Known as “The Maestro of Movie Magic,” these chatbots send follow-up messages within 14 days of initial interactions, provided users exchanged at least five messages. Meta, collaborating with Alignerr, aims to enhance user engagement and foster deeper conversations, similar to AI services from startups like Character.AI and Replika. However, issues surrounding user safety have emerged, especially after a lawsuit linked Character.AI to a tragic incident. Meta emphasizes that its chatbots are not licensed professionals and should not be relied upon for critical decisions, reinforcing that they can’t replace expert advice. While the initiative aligns with Mark Zuckerberg’s vision to combat loneliness, Meta’s business model, heavily reliant on advertising, raises questions regarding the commercialization and potential advertising integration of these AI companions. Predictions suggest Meta’s generative AI could generate $2-3 billion by 2025.
