Meta’s Stock AI Model Postponed to May as Google and OpenAI Gain Momentum

Meta Platforms has delayed the release of its forthcoming AI model, “Avocado,” to at least May 2026, due to underwhelming performance in internal testing, which currently ranks between Google’s Gemini 2.5 and 3. This delay follows their last major AI model, Llama 3, introduced in 2024. To maintain competitiveness, Meta is considering temporarily licensing Google’s Gemini for its products until Avocado is ready. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has committed to developing a leading “personal superintelligence” system, crucial for competing with major tech firms like Apple. With capital expenditure plans of up to $135 billion for 2026, Meta aims to bolster its AI infrastructure despite recent stock fluctuations. This licensing discussion suggests a significant shift in strategy, potentially boosting Google’s standing in the AI arena. Meanwhile, Meta continues to enhance its AI capabilities in advertising and content recommendations, emphasizing its leadership in the smart glasses market.
