Mexico Unveils Plans for Its Own Large Language Model

Mexico is advancing an artificial intelligence (AI) language model to enhance its role in the global, data-driven economy, as announced by Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard. This initiative will be launched at the Mexico IA+ Accelerated Investment event in Mexico City on November 12-13, with significant backing from Nvidia. Ebrard emphasized the urgency of mastering AI technology, describing it as the “modern alphabet” crucial for national competitiveness.

The project aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s goal to establish a National Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, part of Plan México. Nvidia will provide training to develop specialized talent, integrating Mexican culture and history into the AI model. With a youthful workforce and over 5.5 million economic units, Mexico is well-positioned for AI development. The government aims to create over 70 data centers, potentially generating $27 billion in indirect economic impact. This strategic initiative seeks to foster a competitive AI landscape and connect with over 5 million students and businesses nationwide.
