Michigan Chosen for OpenAI’s Stargate Data Center; Gov. Whitmer Heralds Historic Investment

A groundbreaking OpenAI Stargate facility is set to launch in Saline Township, marking Michigan’s largest economic investment ever, as announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The multi-billion-dollar data center, developed by Oracle and Related Digital, will generate over 2,500 construction jobs and 450 on-site jobs, contributing significantly to Washtenaw County’s economy. This facility is part of a $500 billion nationwide investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure aimed at ensuring AI technologies benefit all. Construction is anticipated to start in early 2026, pending regulatory approval. The site supports Michigan’s legacy as a hub for engineering and manufacturing and utilizes a closed-loop water system, preserving over 700 acres for agriculture and conservation. Additionally, Related Digital will invest $14 million in local initiatives. The announcement comes amid discussions around the environmental impact of data centers, with local opposition to a proposed site in Howell Township highlighting community concerns about sustainable growth and energy demand.
