Microsoft Enhances Windows Notepad with Tables and Streaming AI Features

Microsoft is transforming Notepad, its longstanding text editor, by introducing native table support and real-time AI streaming capabilities. Now available for Windows Insiders on the Canary and Dev channels, the update allows users to format data using Markdown syntax or an intuitive UI toolbar. Notepad version 11.2510.6.0 moves beyond plain text, enabling users to insert tables—previously a feature of more complex applications like Word. Access is facilitated through a new “Table” button or by typing Markdown. This functional upgrade includes a right-click context menu for easy row and column manipulation, enhancing note structuring.

Moreover, the update addresses AI latency issues by implementing a streaming model for features like Write, Rewrite, and Summarize, ensuring quicker text display. However, the local processing remains exclusive to Copilot+-equipped PCs. Microsoft also reinforces its monetization strategy by linking advanced AI features to Microsoft 365 subscriptions, modernizing Notepad while fostering user engagement in its service ecosystem.
