Microsoft is enhancing 365 Copilot with a new feature called “Researcher with Computer Use,” allowing AI agents to autonomously perform web tasks, thereby advancing automation in knowledge work. This tool functions like a browser agent, akin to ChatGPT, capable of navigating, clicking, and running code to simplify complex searches and report generation. Operating inside a sandboxed virtual machine (VM) within Windows 365, it provides a secure environment that isolates activity from the company network and user devices. While the agent can access restricted resources with user approval, security concerns remain, as it may interact with external content. Admins control data access, blocking sensitive information by default while allowing specific data sources for user groups. Microsoft emphasizes that all sandbox activity is subject to auditing. Despite protective measures, the deployment of autonomous AI continues to raise security challenges, demanding careful oversight to mitigate risks inherent in open web interactions.
