Microsoft is in advanced negotiations with OpenAI to secure ongoing access to its technology, even if OpenAI achieves advanced general intelligence (AGI). This agreement would facilitate OpenAI’s full transition to a commercial enterprise. Reports suggest talks could conclude within weeks, although regulatory hurdles and lawsuits, including one from Elon Musk, pose challenges. Currently structured as a non-profit, OpenAI aims to overcome restrictions that limit its fundraising and commercialization potential. Microsoft, having invested $13.75 billion and integrated OpenAI’s models into its Azure OpenAI Service, seeks a larger equity stake, potentially ranging from 30-35%. This restructure would allow Microsoft not only to maintain strategic access to OpenAI’s innovations but also to benefit from increased investor returns. As negotiations progress, OpenAI is also focused on ensuring Microsoft implements its technologies safely, particularly as it approaches AGI.
