Microsoft has integrated Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1 AI models into Microsoft 365 Copilot, expanding model choices beyond OpenAI. This enhancement allows users to access Anthropic models in the Researcher tool and Microsoft Copilot Studio. Charles Lamanna, president of Microsoft’s Copilot team, stated that Copilot will still utilize OpenAI models while providing users the flexibility to switch to Anthropic models easily. The Researcher agent can now leverage either OpenAI’s advanced models or Claude Opus 4.1 through a “Try Claude” button in the Copilot app. Additionally, Copilot Studio will support building agents with Anthropic models for various tasks, including workflow automation. Interestingly, Anthropic’s AI models remain hosted on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft’s competitor, accessed via the Anthropic API. This move follows recent partnerships, hinting at future collaborations. Microsoft anticipates further integration of Anthropic’s models in Excel and PowerPoint for enhanced functionality.
