Microsoft’s New Medical AI Tool Boasts Fourfold Accuracy Over Human Doctors | Technology News

Share

Microsoft has unveiled the “Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator” (MAI-DxO), an innovative medical AI tool designed to tackle complex diagnostic challenges that even seasoned physicians find difficult. Developed by Microsoft’s AI health unit, led by Mustafa Suleyman, MAI-DxO achieved an impressive diagnostic accuracy of 85.5% when benchmarked against real-world cases from the New England Journal of Medicine. This performance significantly outstrips that of experienced doctors, who scored only 20% in similar scenarios. The AI operates through a virtual panel of five specialized agents, each contributing to the diagnostic process by selecting tests and formulating hypotheses. Trained on 304 complex case studies, the tool utilizes a novel “chain of debate” methodology to elucidate its diagnostic reasoning. While promising, Microsoft acknowledges the need for more data and regulatory frameworks before fully deploying MAI-DxO in healthcare settings, working alongside health organizations to validate its efficacy.
