Mila Partners with Mozilla to Create Open-Source AI Solutions

Mozilla, the creator of Firefox, is investing an initial $1 million CAD in a strategic partnership with Montréal’s AI research institute, Mila. This collaboration aims to advance open-source AI tools and enhance user control over data shared with large language models (LLMs). Valérie Pisano, Mila’s president, described the partnership as a “landmark” initiative that may evolve into a multi-year effort. The first joint project focuses on developing memory architecture for AI agents, enabling users to retain context when switching between LLMs. Mozilla’s president, Mark Surman, emphasized a vision for AI rooted in openness, privacy, and humanity. The partnership also supports Canada’s approach to “AI sovereignty,” striving for an independent software stack that lessens reliance on U.S. technology. Founded in 1993 by Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, Mila collaborates with major Québec institutions, enhancing Canada’s innovation strategy through federal support.
