French AI startup Mistral has launched what it describes as Europe’s first AI reasoning model, aiming to compete with leading U.S. and Chinese companies like OpenAI and Google. Backed by political support, including endorsement from French President Emmanuel Macron, Mistral focuses on its European identity while adhering to an open-source model, making its technology accessible to the public, similar to practices by Meta and certain Chinese firms. Despite being recognized as a strong contender in advanced AI, Mistral still lags behind in revenue and user base. However, experts note a shift in AI development toward reasoning models due to diminishing returns from merely increasing data and computational power. Mistral’s recent offerings include Magistral Small and Magistral Medium, designed for public download and enterprise use, respectively. These models aim to enable AI to handle complex tasks involving logic and nuance, contrasting with the proprietary approaches typical of dominant American firms. Mistral is valued at approximately $6.2 billion.
