Dr. Regina Barzilay’s life changed dramatically in 2014 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite a family history of BRCA genes being absent, she wished for the AI tool, Mirai, developed later with MIT students. Launched in 2019, Mirai analyzes mammograms to predict breast cancer risk within five years, potentially catching issues much earlier than traditional methods. Recognized in TIME’s 2025 list of AI innovators, Barzilay also co-developed Sybil, an AI tool forecasting lung cancer risk from CT scans, inspired by personal experiences. With breast cancer being the most common cancer among women globally, early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Barzilay emphasizes the importance of integrating validated AI tools into clinical care to reduce uncertainty in medical diagnoses and enhance patient trust. Her mission is to improve healthcare outcomes through advanced AI technologies, while navigating regulatory challenges to bring her innovations to clinical practice.
