The study involved 54 adults who wrote essays using AI, search engines, or independently. Findings indicated that cognitive engagement was lower in those using AI, correlating with lesser recall and ownership over their work. However, the researchers acknowledged the preliminary nature of their claims, as participants didn’t undergo an extensive comparison. The study emphasized that, like calculators, AI should augment learning processes rather than replace fundamental skills.
