OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-5, has received mixed reviews in China following its US launch. While OpenAI claims GPT-5 is the “smartest, fastest, most useful model yet,” offering improved performance in coding, mathematics, writing, health, and visual perception, some critics argue it lacks significant breakthroughs. The model features a built-in “thinking” function with modes for “standard” and “deep thinking” that adapt to user interactions. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described it as a “PhD-level expert” in various fields. However, in China, where OpenAI tools are unavailable, experts like Zhang Linfeng believe the local AI landscape remains competitive. Zhang noted that GPT-5 isn’t significantly ahead of Chinese models, suggesting domestic developers will not feel substantial pressure. He believes the system lacks distinguishing characteristics, indicating that GPT-5 might not revolutionize AI usage in regions with existing robust models.
