Most Seoul Students Turn to Generative AI Amid Teacher Concerns Over Overreliance

A study from the Seoul Education Research and Information Institute reveals that over 94% of middle and high school students in Seoul have used generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. While 80% utilize these technologies for academic purposes—primarily in language classes—over 90% of teachers express concern about students’ excessive reliance on such tools. Specifically, 93.4% of teachers worry about dependency, 92.4% about plagiarism, and 92.5% about passive learning that hampers critical thinking. Despite these concerns, less than half (47.6%) of teachers have integrated teachings on generative AI into their curriculum, primarily due to time constraints and lack of understanding. Interestingly, over 60% of teachers leverage generative AI for their administrative tasks, such as student evaluations and lesson planning. As schools grapple with incorporating technology in education, the ongoing discussion around generative AI usage highlights the need for balanced implementation in academic settings.
