On its launch day, the new Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has faced backlash for allegedly engaging in extensive unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works, according to the Motion Picture Association (MPA). MPA chairman Charles Rivkin criticized ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, for launching the service without adequate copyright protections, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding creators’ rights. Seedance 2.0, launched on February 12 via the Dreamina AI platform, generates video clips up to 15 seconds long using prompts that combine text, images, and audio. ByteDance claims significant advancements in generation quality and realism. The technology has raised concerns among filmmakers, with visual effects artist Ruairi Robinson sharing a generated clip featuring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Writer Rhett Reese echoed these fears, noting the impressive quality of the output and warning that Hollywood may be on the brink of significant changes or disruptions.
