Musk Proposes 2025 OpenAI Collaboration to Zuckerberg, According to Court Documents

Elon Musk approached Mark Zuckerberg about joining him in a bid for OpenAI’s intellectual property prior to Musk’s unsolicited $97.4 billion offer in February 2025, as revealed in newly unsealed court documents. These communications show the complex relationship between the two tech leaders, which has included quips about MMA fights. On February 3, Zuckerberg informed Musk that the White House DOGE office, which Musk leads, was making progress and offered support against doxxing efforts. Musk expressed interest in collaborating on the OpenAI bid, suggesting a call to discuss further. A court briefing noted that while Musk identified Zuckerberg as a potential collaborator for investment in OpenAI, no agreements were formed. Additionally, Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI aims to seek damages over alleged misleading practices surrounding the organization’s transition to a for-profit model. The trial is set for April 27 in Oakland, California.
