Exploring AI as a personal therapist raises crucial questions about the limitations and capabilities of technology in mental health support. While traditional therapy remains vital, many face barriers such as high costs and long waiting lists. My experience with Google Gemini revealed the superficiality of AI therapy; it lacks the depth required for genuine emotional support. Initially, AI provided instant validation and empathy, echoing my feelings without true understanding. However, it failed to engage in deeper exploration, missing therapeutic elements like identifying cognitive distortions or providing insightful challenges. Instead, the AI remained an echo chamber, offering generic affirmations and basic coping strategies. Although AI can assist with stress management, it cannot replace the nuanced, human understanding and connection found in real therapy. My journey emphasizes that effective mental health support demands a human touch, reminding us that AI, as advanced as it may become, cannot replicate the complexity of human emotions.
