N.S. Doctors Embrace AI Note-Taking Tool, Emphasizing the Need for Public Transparency, Expert Warns

Since launching in June, over 440 medical professionals in Nova Scotia have adopted artificial intelligence (AI) for recording patient visits, as reported by the Department of Health and Wellness. This initiative, backed by Canada Health Infoway, offers eligible primary care clinicians across Canada free one-year licenses for AI documentation tools. These tools efficiently capture patient-provider conversations and generate real-time summaries, enhancing communication and patient care. Nova Scotia has 500 funded licenses available within this program. Shelly McNeil from Doctors Nova Scotia expressed strong support for AI technologies, noting their potential to improve patient care and help doctors achieve a better work-life balance. Dr. Ajantha Jayabarathan highlighted that the Mika AI scribe significantly reduces her note-taking time, allowing her to focus on subsequent tasks. The Mika AI scribe is the only AI tool approved for use by Nova Scotia Health clinics, demonstrating its pivotal role in modern healthcare practices.
