Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella visited India to promote the company’s AI tools—Copilot, agentic AI, and datasets—encouraging local businesses and the government to adopt these technologies. This initiative comes as Microsoft invests $17.5 billion in AI infrastructure and plans to upskill 20 million people over four years, amidst rising competition from Google, which announced a $15 billion investment for a one-gigawatt data center in India.
During his visit, Nadella demonstrated Microsoft’s AI capabilities and highlighted the engagement with 109 Indian companies already using its services. Both Microsoft and Google are committed to local data sovereignty, ensuring data used on their platforms remains within India.
As generative AI is projected to significantly boost India’s GDP—potentially adding up to $1.5 trillion by 2030—the competition for dominance in this rapidly growing digital market intensifies. Analysts predict that this is part of a broader strategy by Big Tech to capture lucrative multi-billion-dollar contracts in the region.
