Navigating Student Wellbeing in the AI Era: A Global Perspective on Stress, Confidence, and Connection

The HEPI blog, authored by Isabelle Bristow of Studiosity, examines findings from the ninth annual Student Wellbeing Survey, conducted by YouGov in November 2024. This global survey emphasizes the growing role of AI in higher education, revealing that 79% of students utilize AI tools, yet this reliance often leads to stress—68% of respondents reported heightened personal stress from AI use. The survey also highlights variations by country, with UK students exhibiting skepticism towards AI adoption. In contrast, UAE and Singapore students perceive their institutions as more adaptable to AI integration. Beyond AI, the survey identifies broader stress factors, including fear of failure and balancing life commitments. Additionally, aspects like belonging and employability significantly influence student wellbeing, with 59% feeling confident about job prospects post-graduation. This data underscores the necessity for universities to create tailored support frameworks that enhance AI navigation, belonging, and mental health, all while addressing the unique challenges faced by students across various regions.
