Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj is trialing the AI tool “ChestGuru” to enhance emergency chest X-ray diagnoses. This innovative software, developed by Nepali health-tech firm Second Eye, can detect 14 conditions, including tuberculosis and pneumonia, instantly from a single X-ray. Dr. Ghanashyam Gurung notes that ChestGuru enables junior doctors to make accurate diagnoses independently, reducing the reliance on senior staff. The AI system processes images directly on laptops, eliminating the need for fragile printed films, streamlining workflows, and prioritizing urgent cases in crowded emergency rooms. Its integration aids in quicker triage and improved patient safety. The tool also provides instant report generation, enhancing the efficiency of treatment decisions. Having been scientifically validated, ChestGuru supports the Nepali language, facilitating broader access for healthcare workers. This AI innovation promises operational advantages, especially for overwhelmed peripheral health facilities, ensuring timely and effective patient care.
