The district is initiating the use of AI tools, Gemini Pro and NotebookLM, initially available to administrators, with plans to train teachers before granting them access. A dedicated AI security and monitoring platform will be established before these tools are introduced to students.
The policy stresses that AI should complement, not replace, traditional teaching methods or critical thinking. With a focus on enhancing educational efficiency, the policy allows for AI-assisted brainstorming and research while mandating proper citation. The board discussed developing structures to monitor ethical AI usage in schools, establishing an AI committee for ongoing evaluation. This initiative aims to improve instructional support and operational efficiency within New Haven Public Schools.
